2 NY Men Charged With Illegal Gill Net Fishing

A pair of Jefferson County men are facing charges for illegally taking fish from Red Lake by using a gill net. 31-year-old Jerry A. Segouin of Dexter and 40-year-old James W. Heise of Watertown were observed by an Environmental Conservation Police officer on October 1st loading tubs of net into a vehicle at the state fishing access parking lot on Red Lake in the town of Theresa. Investigation led to them being ticketed for several violations of environmental conservation law.

Both men were charged with illegally setting gill nets, unlawfully possessing undersized game fish, and possessing over the limit of game fish. They are scheduled to appear in the town of Theresa court to be arraigned on the charges.

Environmental conservation officials removed over 400 fish from approximately two thousand feet of gill net. The fish included Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, and Black Crappie. Stephen Litwhiler of the DEC office in Watertown says these kinds of illegal fishing activities can seriously impact sport fishing for law-abiding anglers.

”This kind of activity can deplete the fisheries of a small lake in a fairly short amount of time…we suspect it is going on around the North Country, but catching the perpetrators really requires cooperation from the public.”
