Snakehead Fish found in Queens NY lake

During a routine lake sampling, NYS DEP discovered 6 Northern Snakehead fish in Meadow Lake, Queens, NY. The invasive species from Asia is a voracious predator that can quickly decimate a lake or pond of its fish.

Most likely these fish were purchased live from an Asian store, and then placed in the lake with the hope that it would provide future meals. There is currently a ban on selling live snakeheads.

To prevent further damage, the NYS DEP needs to determine how many there are and proceed to remove them.

Meanwhile in New Hampshire a 2 1/2 pound Pacu, a tropical cousin of the Piranha, was caught Sunday night at Tate Pond, Manchester. At first the fisherman thought he had a really big Sunfish until he noticed the pointy teeth. The Pacu was illegally dumped into the pond from someone's home aquarium.
