Fairfield County commuters know the roadways can be a rough ride during rush hour. Soon, they may be able to take the water instead. A 286 million transportation bill approved in Congress last week contains $10 million dollars to build Connecticut's first high-speed ferry terminals.
Ferry advocates say the money is a long overdue move to use Long Island Sound to help ease congestion in southern Connecticut along Interstate 95. The bill authorizes five million dollars to build a ferry-highway-rail terminal in New Haven. A $3 million terminal is planned for Bridgeport and a $2 million terminal is planned for Stamford.
Joseph Savino is the harbor master at Bridgeport Port Authority. He says the ferries could take thousands of cars off Interstate 95, and could bring commuters from Bridgeport to Stamford in about 40 minutes. The trip to New York City would take about 90 minutes. "

The homebound commute in January, when the sun is down and the wind is coming from the east, will especially be fun.
