Ice fishing in Connecticut officially ends the last week of February. The best conditions are when the barometer drops and there's an incoming storm. Ice thickness should be between 4-6 inches. The 2 basic techniques: tip up (for larger fish) and jigger (for smaller catches). Hotspots include Pachaug Pond in Griswold and Ashland Pond in Norwich. When using a jigger move the line slowly up and down to create some action, or move it in figure-eights & lift it to different depths.
# Safety and clothing:First be sure that the ice or "solid water" is solid enough to hold your weight without sagging or breaking.
# Cutting through the ice:Make a round 4- to 6-inch hole in the ice using an ice chisel or ice auger. Augers are much easier for ice depths more than 8 inches.
# Checking water depth: Use a 1- to 2-ounce weight to check water depth. Lower the lure to bottom then raise it up to 6 to 18 inches off the bottom. Perch and sunfish may be caught in water 5 to 25 feet deep often in the same areas you caught them in during the fall.
